Week 7 Journal

From The 7 habits of Highly Effective People , by Stephen R Covey. "Each person has the ability to be either reactive or proactive in every situation that arises. This is the true meaning of “response-ability” - the ability to choose our own response. Proactive people are highly responsible." "What matters most in life is not what happens to us, but how we respond to whatever happens. Our basic nature is to act, not to wait to be acted upon. We have the ability to take the initiative in any situation we are in." Stephen R Covey I have been thinking a lot about owning a business. I am just not sure what type of business is right for me or even if owning my own business is what is right for me. I think about activities where I lose track of time because I am enjoying the task. I love gardening, and I love organizing. I have often thought about become a professional organizer. I would go to people's homes and help them de-clutter and become better organized. Th...

Week 6 Journal

"Plato said: “The first and best victory is to conquer self; to be conquered by self is, of all things, the most shameful and vile.” And da Vinci once said: “You will never have a greater or lesser dominion than that over yourself.” Then he goes on to say that “the height of a man’s success is gauged by his self-mastery; the depth of his failure by his self-abandonment. … And this law is the expression of eternal justice. He who cannot establish dominion over himself will have no dominion over others.” In other words, he cannot be a worthy father or leader. Solomon in all his wisdom made this meaningful statement: “He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty; and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh a city.” ( Prov. 16:32 .) " N. Eldon Tanner "Success Is Gauged by Self-Mastery “We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things,...

Week 5 post

This week in class we were asked to choose 7 people as our personal board of advisers. We could choose anyone living or dead. After a lot of thought, I chose the following people: My husband Derek would be my chairman. He knows me better than anyone. He knows when I am taking on too much or when something is bothering me. He is my cheer leader He does everything he can to make me happy. He is extremely intelligent and doesn’t make decisions without thoroughly thinking them through. I love and respect him completely. Jesus is obvious. He is our Savior. He is perfect and knows exactly what I need. He can see the whole picture and can guide me through life in a way that will get me to the Celestial Kingdom. He loves everyone and can give me the support I need. George Washington was amazing. The founder of our country. He led us to victory in the Revolutionary War. His strength, determination and incredible faith gave him the ability to lead thousands. All who were led by him res...

The moral objective is going past the limits and breaking through the barriers to become better and reach higher. The stories help us to relate and see the character in ourselves. We need to see the regular person achieve greatness. We can connect to the story because it is the human story line. "If you can muster the drive, courage and confidence to get back up and try again, you will not be defined by the obstacles; you'll be defined as one who overcame them." Deconstructing Your Fears Your Fear Strategy to Mitigate Risk Way Back to the Status Quo 1. I will hate my career choice and I will be stuck.   Work as an intern to decide if it is the career for me. Take a class or two in the field of counseling to determine if it is truly my interest. I will still have my bachelor ’ s and Master ’ s Degree so I will never be stuck. Getting this education and experience can only open doors for me. I...

week three journal

"Those at the A-level aren’t working for mankind, but living for mankind, trying to lift and help others.  In addition to making a living, they are making a life.  They have a different vision than those at lower levels.  Because of their love for their fellowmen, they define their business in terms of  customers’ needs , such as a builder of homes rather than merely a brick mason.   At levels B through D, business is usually defined in terms of  products   and services  rather than  customers’ needs ." "Making a Living and a Life" Elder Lynn G. Robbins Ethics are the most important part of running a business. I have created a list of boundaries for myself.  I will never let money be my driving factor. I created a list of my personal code of conduct I will never sacrifice my integrity I will never consume alcohol or drugs I will never spend time alone with someone of the opposite sex I will never take credit fo...

Week 2 Journal

"Within this interplay between your vision of the world, your place in it, and your personal goals, are the age-old questions of philosophy: What is the relationship between the part (the individual) and the whole (the community)? What is “real” and what is not? What is permanent in this world and what is subject to change? These are all questions that must be asked on a successful journey." "Stars and Stepping Stones" by Jeff Sandefer The Acton School of Business  Plan your life goal. Start at the end (about age 80) what do you want to be know most for? We are really only capable of doing 2 to 3 things well according to Sandefer. What are we willing to sacrifice to do the other things well. Now work backward decade by decade with that end goal in mind. What needs to have happened at each milestone? "Your steppingstones are not a rigid plan. Instead, they are a way of dealing with reality. Even with all the careful preparations and millions of calculations ...

Week 1 Journal

September 21, 2019 First Journal Post for Entrepreneur Class. It feels a little strange to create a journal that will be read by more than just myself. I am taking this class because I am curious about what it takes to start a business. I plan to get a master's degree in school counseling but I would like to create workshops for teens. I want to create a place where they would feel safe to open up to each other and teach each other.  Lessons I learned What I learned this week. It is important to find what I am good at doing. I need to learn what my gifts are and focus on those when creating a business. In "Living Life as an Entrepreneur Hero" Jeff Sanderfer says if you don't know your gift, ask a friend. It is often something you are so good at you don't even realize you are doing it. He also says being an entrepreneur is like living life like an adventure. Guy Kawasaki says that your last focus should be money. You can be poor and miserable and you ...
