Week 1 Journal
September 21, 2019
First Journal Post for Entrepreneur Class. It feels a little strange to create a journal that will be read by more than just myself. I am taking this class because I am curious about what it takes to start a business. I plan to get a master's degree in school counseling but I would like to create workshops for teens. I want to create a place where they would feel safe to open up to each other and teach each other.
Lessons I learned
What I learned this week. It is important to find what I am good at doing. I need to learn what my gifts are and focus on those when creating a business. In "Living Life as an Entrepreneur Hero" Jeff Sanderfer says if you don't know your gift, ask a friend. It is often something you are so good at you don't even realize you are doing it. He also says being an entrepreneur is like living life like an adventure.
Guy Kawasaki says that your last focus should be money. You can be poor and miserable and you can be rich and miserable. He said if you do what you love you will be happy and probably make money. If you choose something that will make the world a better place, will also be more likely to be successful.
This week I watched Secret Billionaire. He is filming a documentary about creating a million dollar business in 90 days from the ground up starting with no cash. He says you don't have to be smarter than anyone else, you just have to be willing to work harder than anyone else.
I learned that business and life is all about relationships. Reid Hoffman says that we each have a personal brand. We need to focus on what our personal brand is. Everything we are helps create that brand. He says that networking is the most important.
In "The Executive Summary The Start Up of You", Hoffman and Casnocha say the network is important. They speak about how important it is to surround yourself with those you aspire to be like. They say my networks is larger than I realize and that relationships are either getting weaker or getting stronger. They suggest fostering relationships by staying connected by sending articles etc.
It was suggested in this weeks readings to focus on a few key ideas. Do not take classic lecture notes. If everything is important, nothing is important so only focus on a few key ideas.
Lessons I haven't yet learned
I don't know what my dream is. Sanderfer says to dream big and create goals along the way to achieve the big dream. He says you can work backwards starting with the end goal or chose a goal and figure out the first steps and see where it takes you. Right now trying to decide what my dream is seems overwhelming. I have been so focused on my education plans and the job of a school counselor as my end goal. But is that my dream? It is a great schedule. Which is extremely important to me. I want to be home when my kids are home. I want to have summers off. It is time to start figuring out what is my dream.
I need to figure out what my I want my personal brand to look like. I want to focus on my network and learn what they have to say about how they see my personal brand.
